Usually when animals are rescued near large bodies of water, they're
beached sea animals. But that wasn't the case with this amazing rescue
out of the Netherlands! A disaster like this, involving large stranded
animals, would usually leave people scratching their heads until they
realize they have no idea what to do—before euthanizing the creatures to
put them out of their misery. Few would have the initiative,
outside-of-box thinking, and sheer bravery these amazing dutch women so
gracefully demonstrated.
A Massive Storm Swept Over This Small, Dutch Town
Back in 2006, a massive storm poured over a small town
just outside of Amsterdam, leaving over 100 horses stranded on a tiny,
muddy island.
Waiting For Help That May Not Arrive
According to international press, there had been several
unsuccessful rescue attempts, all for naught. Trapped, the elements were
taking their toll on the majestic creatures; their situation was
growing more dire by the hour.
A Call For Bravery And Experience
In desperation, the media appealed to their audience,
asking for experienced riders with horses who do not fear water. They
met the following day and began the process of organizing one more
rescue attempt.
A Hero Is Born
Forty-year-old Norma Miedema rose to leadership because
when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Norma was the first
person to respond to the appeal of authorities. Determined to see a
happy ending, she worked tirelessly until all the horses were safe.
Though she ended up getting
pneumonia, the day's "win" surely more than made up for it.
